Whether you're a global consumer brand advertising its dental hygiene and oral care products on a national scale, or a small to medium sized dental practice running ads in a local magazine, creative well-produced advertising photography will help you make the most of your ad spend. Why would you pay a media company for advertising space without having good creative in place first? That's a rhetorical question by the way. The big players in the dental industry usually have the creative covered because they're generally working with ad agencies and other creative teams. However, while the smaller practices spend plenty of money buying ad space and placing ads, in my experience, rarely do I see professional looking visuals from practices in smaller local markets. My advice; change that! You could be missing huge opportunities. Whether better imagery leads to emergency dental procedures, cosmetic cases or additional cleanings, the investments made in commercial photography for your dental business have the potential pay off big time.

Architectural photos of your space can showcase modern exterior facade, the latest and greatest equipment, comfortable waiting areas, and a focus on patient comfort, building trust and confidence in the practice. If you're a dental manufacturing company showcasing professional architectural photography your offices, manufacturing plants and laboratories can demonstrate your company's commitment to quality, innovation, and a modern, well-equipped environment.

Branding, Marketing & Advertising:

Architectural photography can be highly beneficial when used on your company website, social media channels, brochures, and other marketing materials and advertisements aimed at attracting new patients.

Attracting Talent:

Elevating dental practice branding with professional headshots.

No matter what industry you work in, having a well-crafted headshot with articulate lighting and a genuine expression goes a long way in conveying professionalism and the healthcare industry is no exception. If a dentist's headshot portrays a lack of confidence in their own smile, how can they inspire confidence in their patients? People seek human connection. A friendly and approachable headshot helps patients connect with dentists, hygienists and staff on a more personal level, building trust and rapport.

From a branding perspective, consistency from headshot to headshot is key. The use of professional headshots that have a consistent look and feel across all platforms strengthens brand recognition. This is generally achieved by partnering with the same headshot photographer time and time again. Find a photographer that has a unique and distinct style that resonates with the look you're going for.

Group Portraits of Staff

Dental staff group shot on a white background. Dental practices can use this kind of shot to showcase their friendly staff.

There are a number of reasons you may choose to include a group shot of your entire staff. Perhaps you have a small team of people working at your practice. Because you have a small team, this group photo could be used to demonstrate the individual attention that a patient would get at by visiting your practice. On the other hand, if you're looking to franchise your practice, your group photo could be used to visually showcase that your team is large enough to handle the daily demands of many patients at any given time.

Lifestyle Imagery for Dental Practices

In addition to professional headshots and group shots of your staff, you may also want to consider adding lifestyle photography to your visual repertoire. Lifestyle photos typically involve showing interactions between people. For general marketing purposes, this could range from shots of the dentist and hygienist interacting with a patient in a relaxed and friendly manner, candid photos capturing the daily activities within the practice or lifestyle shots of the dentists outside of the office (ie. at a community event, engaging in hobbies).

Portrait of a dentist with his dirt bike enjoying a sunny afternoon on a day off

This dentist rides dirt bikes in his spare time. I photographed this commercial motocross style portrait in the middle of a large field on a sunny day using some off camera flash to compliment the hard sunlight. These kind of photos can be helpful for bringing a relatable human element to any practice.

Commercial portrait of a volunteer fire fighter standing in front of a fire house bay. Commercial portrait photography by Brian Rodgers Jr at Digital Art That Rocks.

This dentist is also a volunteer fire fighter in his spare time. I remember photographing his portrait in front a firehouse bay door under soft lighting. The background had a lot going on, so in order to simplify the scene I shot with a wide open aperture.

For advertising purposes, this could be a commercial photoshoot involving more production and even hired talent. These photos could range from photos of people confidently smiling in various social settings (e.g., at a family gathering, on vacation) to photos depicting increased self-confidence and improved social interactions as a result of good oral health. This can be as highly creative or cliche as you choose to make it.

Product Photography Services for Dental Manufacturers

Whether you're a consumer brand, industrial manufacturer or retailer of dental supplies or dental equipment, it's important to have clean, well lit product photos of your dental products. And when it comes to marketing and advertising specifically, you're going to want to add "creativity" to the mix as well if you want to capture someone's attention.

Product photography of orthodontic braces on a dental typodont by commercial product photographer Brian Rodgers Jr.

Product photography of orthodontic braces on a dental typodont. It takes a lot of skill and expertise to photograph typodonts because they move around on you. Aligning the top and bottom teeth can take specialized tools and time to properly align for commercial product photography purposes. Additionally, when photographing multiple typodonts across products lines, consistency is crucial. That means that I pay a lot of attention to exactly what focal lengths and angle are being used so I can consistently reproduce angles time and time again.

Dental product photography is a highly specialized niche within the broader field of commercial product photography. Dental products can be very tricky to photograph. So it's important to find a product photographer with experience shooting dental and oral health products. Over the past decade I've photographed my fair share of dental products and through that process, I've developed and implemented my own tools and proprietary workflows for for dealing with the nuances of photographing things like typodonts, braces, dentures, adhesives, product packaging and other oral care products.

Product photo of an orthodontic spring aligner on a dental typodont. Single color typodonts like this require expert knowledge of product lighting because it’s easy to loose the nuances details. Additionally, every typodont that I’ve ever photographed have a lot of imperfections that need to be retouched and cleaned up in Photoshop. Lastly, pay attention to the angle of this product. This is a real life product, not a 3D rendering. I’m sure I don’t need to remind how basic physics work, but levitating product shots like this require some thought and expertise.

Orange orthodontic adhesive caplets on a white background. This may look like a simple shot, but it’s actually quite difficult. These caplets are very small products that require the use of a specialized macro lens. Additionally, the plastic that the caplets are made of have a lot of blemishes that need to be removed in post-production.

This kind of product image may look simple, but it can take a lot of time to create a nice looking composition, where everything is visible while also laid out in a pleasing way. Additionally, cardboard doesn’t always hold it’s place while on set, so there are times where additional rigging is required in order to keep things right where you want them.

In addition to photographing your finished products, you may want to consider visually documenting the process of your products being made. If you use cutting edge technology or your products are handcrafted one at a time, documenting this process can be a powerful tool in telling your brand's story.

Video Production Services for Dental Practices

TV Commercial - 30 Second Spot

Case study video talking about work life balance in dentistry.

In addition to creating creative and impactful dental photography, video production is yet another essential marketing tool you may choose to utilize. There are a variety of reasons you might want to add video into your visual marketing mix.

Video can be used across a wide variety of platforms including your company website, social media platforms, TV, web advertising and even out of home digital signage like billboards. You may also want to consider using video for TV and web commercials, franchise videos, doctor recruitment videos and powerful patient and employee testimonial videos.

Need Visual Assets for Your Visual Marketing Mix?

No matter what visual assets you decide to add to your marketing mix, it's important to find the commercial photographer that's right for you. Remember that professional photography is essential for creating a polished and impactful look that enhances your brand.

Look for a photographer that has experience with product photography, retouching, architectural photography, and headshot photography within the dental industry. Not only should the photographer have experience in these areas of photography, they should have a portfolio that clearly demonstrates their creativity and production value. The imagery they create will have the ability to resonate with the specific target audience of the practice (i.e. families, emergency patients, orthodontic patients, cosmetic dentistry patients).
